Mobilizing seniors and others to influence policy issues

crowd omd.jpgElected officials respond in an immediate and personal way to individual constituents. Your advocacy helps legislators understand how policies affect their constituents.

It is this ‘voice of the consumer’ that can make the issue real for legislators and have a critical impact on how policy is shaped.

National Health Care Reform:

Project 2020:

Call your state legislators to urge them to restore proposed cuts to senior services and Invest in Older Michiganians.

In-home and other supportive services for needy older adults are slated to be cut by $2.2 million in 2010. Those services include meals-on-wheels, homemaking, personal care, respite care, day care and care management and volunteer programs.

These state-funded services keep elders independent and living in their own homes with the help of caregivers.

Read about the issues at Invest in Older Michiganians and call your legislators today! (see contact information below)

In the year 2020, just 10 short years from now, almost one in six Americans will be age 65 or older and the size of the age 85 or older population will have doubled.

Project 2020 aims to:

  • Provide the resources to implement consumer-centered and cost-effective long-termcare strategies authorized in the 2006 reauthorization of the Older Americans Act;
  • Empower the Aging Services Network to implement these strategies through a three-pronged programencompassing person-centered access to information, evidence-based disease prevention and health promotion activities;
  • And enhanced nursing home diversion services

All while reducing federal Medicaid and Medicare costs. Project 2020 has been introduced in the House and Senate.

crowd_1small.jpgOlder Michiganians Day 2009

On June 24, 2009 hundreds of senior advocates converged on the Capitol Building in Lansing for the statewide Older Michiganians Day.

They rallied to bring attention to the benefits that older citizens bring to Michigan and to advance three overall strategies for the State legislature to adopt.
