In the past few months, Xerox has been flooding the television screens of America with an intriguing commercial. It features several young managers of a sizable corporation sitting around a conference table, prodded by their CEO to find ways to cut expenses.

“William” stood in an old photo next to his Harley-Davidson looking proud and handsome in his leather pants and fringed jacket. With one boot up on the bike peg, he looked straight ahead with a carefree, daring expression in his eyes. When his workday as a long-haul trucker was over, the freedom of two wheels must have been intoxicating.

“Good night, Grandpa.”
“Good night, John-Boy.”
‘Good night, Mama”

And on and on.  Remember the ending of each episode of The Waltons TV show back in the ‘70’s?  Each member of the family bid each other good night in the program that depicted a rural, depression era home where Grandma and Grandpa lived with mom, dad and the grandkids, all happily living together in a big farmhouse.  Jobs were scarce and there was very little economic security, but they got by somehow on hard work and pulling together.  The narrated show’s ending was about as sappy as it gets, and I loved it.
